"A Family of Image Bearers" - by Bryan Johnston

“So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:27). Out of these two image bearers, came a diversity of humanity created by God. God is diverse, distinct, and divine. God is holy and unlike any other. God is indescribable, yet knowable. I stand in awe of God. For is God is a wonder and a beauty.

Each one of us is created distinct, different, and made holy by God. We each reflect and express the image and likeness of God in a variety of diverse ways. When we see God in scripture we see a vast array of qualities, characteristics, and images of God. We see a Mighty Warrior and a Good Shepherd, we see one of Strength and Compassion, we see a Master and a Host, we see Power and Patience, we see a Shield and a Staff, we see a Teacher and a Knitter, we see a Builder and a Potter, we see Farmer and Cook, we see a Fisherman and a Gardener, we see a King and a Servant, we see a Lion and a Lamb, we see a Father and a Friend, we see a Sacrifice and a Savior.

There is a place for all personalities, types, and kinds of image bearers in the family of God, for we are all from God and called children of God when we come to God. We are bear God’s image as people of God. God’s image is endless and not-culturally bond. God’s image is diverse and not socially defined. God’s love is eternal and not humanly limited. God’s grace is sufficient and we are all recipients of God’s mercy. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:13-14
