"A Church With Direction" - by Norm Russell (written in early 1990's, still a timeless message) It is important for every church to know why they exist. Historically, when a church has been started in a community, there have been assumptions that everyone knew why they were there and why they existed. Unfortunately that assumption was never verbalized or communicated to the membership much less to the new members who came into their fellowship. Unless a church knows why they are and for what they have been called to be and do, it will never move beyond where they are even though they are busy doing a number of good things. I have never been fond of using the corporate world as a model for church work and organization, but in this matter, I can find no better way to illustrate the point. No company just starts up doing business without first asking why they are business. Is it sales, manufacturing, or service? These questions though simple must be asked before business begins. It is from this that a purpose statement is put together to give direction for goals and decisions within the organization. Our church was formed with a purpose in mind. That purpose at the time may not have been a formal statement and it may have existed only in the minds of those who, nearly fifty years ago, began the work in the Bay area. Today we are at a cross roads We are poised to become either a "great church" or a "good enough church." The choice is ours to make. Status quo is not acceptable if we wish to become the church that God is working through. We have a purpose statement in place, you can see it in big blue fetters in the front of the auditorium. You can read it on the front of this bulletin. It simply says, "A church that is committed to loving, obeying, and discipling." As we focus on the new year, that statement will be the direction of our efforts. There will be more said in the future regarding our need to be a purpose driven church, so stay alert and God bless each of you as you focus on serving God in this church this year. Norm Russell |
