Purpose Driven (written in 1997 before the arrival of youth minster Paul Swaim) Rick Warren penned a book that has stirred many in the religious community. His book titled The Purpose Driven Church has been used by numerous churches to refocus their efforts at serving God and reaching those outside of Jesus. Apparently last Sunday night a huge number of you came together with a purpose in mind, that being to discuss the need of a youth minister (I had to be in Portland early Monday morning for business reasons) When it came time to ask you for a commitment, you rose to the occasion and promised that you would increase your giving to cover Paul Swaim's salary. You are to be commended for your desire to make this happen. From what I have heard, many of you had already committed yourself to increasing your giving prior to the meeting. It would be great if everyone felt as strong as many of you do about their giving. Our attitudes towards this subject shows a maturity in our relationship with God. As I understand, it was stated very forcefully Sunday night, that Paul's coming does NOT relieve any of us of our responsibility of working with our children. Paul cannot replace you as a parent, teacher, Counselor or guide. He can support your values and assist in instilling Biblical teachings into your child's heart. Let me encourage you to begin today to increasing your giving. We need to help Paul move, and we are going to need to set up an office for him. That means we need office furniture and other items so that he can begin his work immediately upon arrival in January. The extra you give now will enable us to do that. Just as you were purpose driven last Sunday, I pray that as a church we be purpose driven in our work that God has placed before us. Last Sunday too, we said to Jarrod and Ramona [Ed: Jarrod and Ramona Ortiz, who moved] how much we love them and that we hate to see them leave. I know of no two people who have more of a genuine love for God than these two do. Today is their last Sunday with us, so we say 'We'll see you later, God bless you go with God." Norm Russell |
