| Sermon Summary 3/11/18 Sermon Title: The Good Life: Above and Beyond Pt. 1 Scripture: Matthew 5:21-32 In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said that he has come to fulfill the law. In Matthew 5:21-32 he gives his correct interpretation on three commands given to the people. Jesus speaks of a way of living that is from God above and speaks of a way of living that is beyond, looking forward to life in the kingdom of God that is to come as a reality of how God’s people are to start living now. He teaches the correct intent of each law by extending and countering the common interpretation with the ethic of above and beyond. Jesus is concerned with the heart of the disciples as they are formed into the likeness of Christ through their acts of love and friendship living in obedience to the way of God. Jesus addresses self-interest, selfish desires, and the sacredness of marriage through his interpretation the laws concerning murder, adultery, and divorce, and purposing a life of submission, sacrifice, and reconciliation. God is for friendship: a life of being with, for, and unto us. Friendship with, for, and unto others is the way of God.
