| Sermon Summary 11/19/17 Standing for the Word of God/Sermon on the Mount Scripture: Nehemiah 8:1-12 (This is a two part Sermon: Part 1 – Explaining why we have the tradition of standing during our Scripture Reading, Part 2: Standing while we just read the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7) Standing is an appropriate posture for coming before God. Standing shows respect and honor to God. Standing helps us to be attentive, receptive, and responsive to the word of God. When we come before God through our acts of worship: prayer, singing, reading scripture, giving, and Lord’s Supper we should work hard to keep our hearts right. We are easily distracted so adjust your posture to keep your attention on God, who is the focus of our worship. Once we are attentive be ready to receive, hear, and understand God’s word. Then respond with your heart, your mouth, and your life. (NOTE: Both parts are in this single lesson, which runs about 47 minutes.
