Sheep and Robbers John 10:7-10 The Pharisees were blind to see and accept that Jesus is Lord, the Son of God. They were hedged in by their own strict adherence to the law. In their efforts to uphold and honor the law of God, they were kept from experiencing God the life and love of God. They also stole the hearts of men away from the Lord through their ignorance of the true intent of the law, which was to draw people to a relationship with him. Point at hand, because a blind man was healed on the Sabbath they could not credit Jesus as Lord. Jesus confronts the legalistic religious leaders by calling himself the gate, the people sheep, and the Jewish leaders thieves and robbers. They were stealing, killing, and destroying the life, love, and hope of the followers of God. While Jesus the Good Shepherd says he has come to give life to the full. This life with God is a life of serving, giving, and building up. The Jewish leaders were living selfishly by focusing on man, while Jesus calls his sheep to live in submission. As sheep we are called to bring life and restoration, by keeping Jesus as Lord. But we may be guilty of being Robbers who steal away the Lordship of Jesus by our selfishness. We may be Robbers who by our efforts make ourselves lords who block other sheep from seeing the Lord as well. We can steal or give. We can kill or bring life. We can destroy or build up. Who is the gate? Are we sheep or are we Robbers? |
