Sermon Summary 5/28/17 Sermon Title: Hungry? Looking For More Scripture: John 6:1-34 Everyone’s thoughts were on the upcoming celebration of the Passover as they were gathering around Jesus because of his miraculous signs and wonders. Already knowing what he was going to do, Jesus asks Philip to get the people something to eat. [He was no doubt worried, as it would cost many months wages just to give those were gathered even a SINGLE BITE!] In turn, Jesus provides a feast by giving thanks to God for a boy’s lunch. Jesus points the attention to God but the followers still do not quit understand Jesus’ intentions. Jesus knows they are not getting it by his statement, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (John 6:26-27). Jesus directs the crowd back to the history of the people of Israel in the desert after being saved from captivity. He reminds them that the Lord provided the manna from heaven and that they Lord provides the living bread today. Just as the Israelites struggled to daily obey the Lords command and to be disciplined in their daily work of feasting on the bread the Lord provided, the people following Jesus were not understanding that the work of God is to daily believe and feast on him. The people ask, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” (John 6:28). The work is to have a daily diet of the Lord, to believe and obey every day, being filled to overflowing and transformed into the likeness of Christ. Believers today have forgotten the Lord. Let us be reminded of the goodness of the Lord. Let us feast daily on the Lord. Let us be disciplined to pay the cost of a daily diet of the Lord. Look no more.
