2016-12-11 - Bryan Johnston - Prelude to Jesus the Messiah: Repent 2016

Sermon Summary - Dec. 11, 2016 - Prelude to Jesus the Messiah: Repent

Scripture Reference: Matthew 3:1-12

Jesus the Messiah has been born. The prde in the gospel of Matthew began with the Magi asking, “Where is the king of the Jews? We have come to worship him.” The second verse of the opening remarks about Jesus the King come from John the Baptist saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near.” As the king, Jesus has come to bring both judgement and salvation. Salvation will come to those who will make a radical change by giving their life in obedience to the Lord. Those who repent respond by confessing their sins and being baptized. John tells of a future baptism that will come with Jesus, a baptism that brings full cleansing and forgiveness by the work of the Holy Spirit. He says, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” John calls for his hearers to evaluate the fruits of their life. If they are not producing good fruit, then he is desperately calling them to repent, or else face judgement. The good news is that that the Lord is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but to come to repentance. The message is still for us today, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

(Editor/Administrator Note: Both the scripture and Bryan use the word REPENT frequently in this sermon. People have probably heard this word a lot on TV, particularly if you like old-time westerns. But what does it really MEAN?

Off to the dictionary: REPENT in our English language stems from Old French repentance penitence (12c.), from present participle stem of repentir (see repent ). But
repentance goes beyond feeling to express distinct purposes of turning from sin to righteousness; the Bible word most often translated repentance means a change of mental and spiritual attitude toward sin. [Century Dictionary]

So to get right to the point, REPENT means not only to be sorry for something you have done wrong (such as sin towards God) but a conscious decision to TURN AWAY from the behavior and to live a better life. You identify that YOU have done something wrong, and you decide *I am not going to live like that any more* and you DO IT.

It is something much easier said than done... but tha is where friends and the church can help. I personally could not have turned away from my past way of life without the help of the church - who not only saved my spiritual life, but are likely responsible for saving my physical life as well... and if you want to know more about that, ask me. I never tire of telling people about it... in particular, ask me how a group of children saved my life. :-)
