| In this lesson, Joshua is demonstrating his sound leadership and reminding the people of all the things God has done for them. Joshua wants to make sure the people keep their eye on the ONE TRUE GOD, and not the many other "gods" being worshiped at the time. Joshua tells them that they MUST CHOOSE who they will serve, as our God is a -jealous god- and will not be second to anyone else. We must choose Him and CONFESS Him as our own God. Times and situations do indeed change, but God and His love, kindness, and caring for us never do. Nor do His rules towards us. Confession is not just something you can say to yourself such as -I confess- although that's not a bad start. It should be done before witnesses, just like our marriage vows were for those of us who are married. We go before witnesses and affirm our commitment to our God. We do the same at baptism, remember? The person baptizing you probably said something that asked you to affirm you believed in God and His perfect love for us; accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And again, Joshua continues to remind them that if they ARE worshiping foreign gods, they've got to go. ALL of them. Throw them away - no matter who or what they are. Remember, anything you put between you and God BECOMES a God. Set your heart on the ONE TRUE GOD and don't let it waver. Note: At the end of this lesson, those present were invited to come forward and make any needs they had known, and a few did. EVERYONE was invited to come forward to confess their belief by signing a big chalkboard that had the scripture, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" written on, and dozens of families did so. It was very inspiring... seeing this form of public confession. |
