Tragedies - we watch helplessly when things like school shootings, weather tragedies and so on happen, and we ask the question: Why does God allow this? Why is it this way? Morgan Freeman, a TV show host, suggests that God is a creation of humanity... could that be true? Doesn't God care? Let's reference Luke 13:1-9 Jesus addresses the topic that may not be so clearly in the text as it is in our mind. He talks about the tower, and how it fell. In vs 3-5 He asks "Do you think that these were more wicked or more sinful?" A common question, particularly in the first century, was Is suffering caused by sin? The Jewish people thought so. If someone was suffering then they MUST have done something wrong. Such as the case of the blind man when He was asked "Rabbi, who sinned, his father or his mother?" and Jesus answers "Neither did." That was something hard for the people to come to grips with, because their culture assumed bad things were caused by bad behaviors. Job is another example: He suffered for Christ, but never did anything wrong. Sometimes we ourselves say "What on earth did I do to deserve this?" Or someone who was doing very well says that it was due to "Good living." This lesson goes into great detail on the subject of why sinners suffer and the righteous go free -- or the reverse. But there WILL BE A FINAL ACCOUNTING - as God never overlooks sin. This is a very thoughtful and sensitive lesson - one that you may want to keep handy to share with friends who seem to be believing that God is punishing them, or that God does not care.
