Celebration of Life: Bill Markham

Bill Markham's memorial service [was] held Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Cornerstone Nazarene Church in the Coos Bay Senior Center at 886 S. 4th Street in Coos Bay. He was known to many of us at NBCOC and was a long-time member of the Bay Area Church of the Nazarene in NB until helping start a new congregation in Coos Bay at Cornerstone. He was born July 30, 1940, in Oak Creek Colorado to Stanley A. and Mary (Burr) Markham. He passed away August 1st due to complications that arose (but were not related to) after cancer surgery at Bay Area Hospital with his wife and my wife at his side. Bill served many years in the USMC just out of high school; which included 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. On leaving the USMC, he served 17 years in the National Guard. He is survived by his wife Bobbie and numerous relatives. The full obituary is below. He was a wonderful person and a dear friend; he'll be sorely missed. --Mark Magill

Billy (“Bill”) Albro Markham, age 78, passed away August 1, 2018 in Coos Bay. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Cornerstone Nazarene Church in the Coos Bay Senior Center at 886 S. 4th Street in Coos Bay.

Bill was born July 30, 1940, in Oak Creek Colorado to Stanley A. and Mary (Burr) Markham.
The family moved to Coos Bay in 1950. Bill attended Coos Bay schools and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1959. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. After he came back to Coos Bay he joined the National Guard and served for 17 years before retiring as a 1st Sgt.

Bill was an accomplished woodworker. He made many beautiful things for his family and friends. He was a cabinet maker for Coos Bay Schools. Much of his handiwork can still be found in the schools throughout the district. When Bill made something, it lasted!
He loved hunting and fishing. He always got his deer on the family farm in Alsea. One of his favorite fishing spots was Farewell Bend where he enjoyed fishing for catfish.

Bill was a member of the Nazarene Church since the early 1950’s. He never met a stranger and had many friends throughout the community.

Bill married his wife Bobbie in 1973. She was a teacher in Coos Bay Schools. His eldest son Jimmy was in her second-grade class at Bunker Hill school.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Mary, and his brother David. He is survived by his wife Bobbie, sons James of NC and Marion (“Butch”) of Texas and BJ of Texas; as well as sisters Ina (“Bob”) Lindsay of Washington, Virginia (Ginger) Gage of Coos Bay, and brothers Bob Markham of Reedsport, Stanley (“Bud”) and Kathy Markham of California. He also has grandchildren Anthony, Chris, and Chelsea, great-grandchildren Felicity and Emmett and numerous nieces, nephews, and his beloved dog Fritz.
