Fences

Fences
Donald Trump (A presidential candidate in the USA) has gone on record saying that if he was elected president, he would build a wall between the United States and Mexico and that Mexico would pay for it. I have no idea how he will accomplish that, but given the mood of the nation toward illegal immigrants coming across the border, he may well get the opportunity to show us.

Very few homes in my neighborhood lack a fence. There may be a sharing of a fence, or one individual
will build his fence and his neighbor will reap the benefit in that he can take advantage of the benefits of having a fence to keep his children safe even though he never shared in the cost of it.

In today's real estate market "curb appeal" is something the potential buyers look at when considering a piece of property or buying a house. What sort of fence one has contributes to that look. Thus a house with a picket fence in front may create a warm cottage like feeling or a concrete wall would cause one to think of living in a compound.

Fences also have multiple uses. It can be to keep things in or they can be erected to keep things out. If
you have small children you may want to have a fence to keep the children safe inside, or if you have a pet that has the potential to run off, you may want to "fence" him/her in.

Having said all of that, would it not be a good idea to consider erecting a fence, (not literally of course)
around some aspects of our lives? In some circles, this is called having boundaries. In other words, we could use fences, or boundaries, to keep intruders out, or to remind us we have reached our limits. Consider you family time. There are so many good wholesome activities available to us, we sometimes find ourselves rushing from one thing to another. Maybe it is time to stop and ask ourselves how is this affecting my family? Are we close or fragmented?

The same can be said about our spiritual lives. It is so easy at times to put God on the back burner. As one former member said, we missed one Sunday and then another, and then another, till we found ourselves in a position where it is difficult to go back to church. Someone failed to erect a boundary or a "fence."

Jesus would use the words "Be Careful" or "Beware." He knew all too well that there is an enemy lying in wait for a disciple to become inadvertently complacent or self-reliant. Anyone who ignores their boundaries, or leaves the gate open on their fence will become prey to the "roaring lion seeking someone to devour." I Peter 5:8.

How does your fence look? Does it need repair? Are you seeing to it that you observe your boundaries?
