Teach Anyway
Mark Magill
The Biblical record of the beginning of the church in Acts is very insightful when you study the behavior of people. The resurrection of Jesus should have caused a dramatic change in the powers that be. They knew Jesus rose from the dead, but they refused to acknowledge that miracle. The healing of the man at the gate beautiful should have awaken in them a sense of wonder but it didn't. The apostles were thrown in prison. However, during the night an angel visited them and told them to go and preach to the people. When the high priest ordered them to be brought to him, those who went to retrieve them found the prison doors closed, locked, and with guards in attendance. When the doors were opened, they found no one. It was reported that the apostles were teaching the people in the temple. Soldiers were sent to bring them to the high priest and not one time did the high priest ask them how it was they got out of their cells. That, to me, is a most astounding thing. Why wouldn't they ask them? Why would they not wonder?

We can learn something from this. First, we learn that no matter the evidence, some would rather believe a falsehood. You cannot make people believe something if they are not going to be honest about the truth. We see this most every day. A person or business may have been shown to be dishonest, but for some reason they continue to have a following. Why is that?

We also learn that when someone rises to power, they will do everything in their being to remain in power. The Pharisees could not deny the resurrection and neither could they dismiss the miracle of the man who was lame and was now walking. Their authority was being threatened and their power over the people was slipping. Someone once wrote that there are two things that mankind lusts for-money and power. Once the person has reached financial security they then seek a position of power.

There is something else we can gain from our text and that is you cannot make people become a Christian. The people and the religious leaders had heard and seen evidence of who Jesus is and yet they refused to believe in Him. Our responsibility is to teach as we go about our daily routine. But the person we attempt to influence is responsible for their own decision. It is obvious not everyone will come to faith no matter how much we try to teach them. Teach anyway.
