Last week, a day passed without much notice. It may have been because of the death of Nelson Mandella, and all the news surrounding it that caused it to slip by virtually unnoticed. It was Saturday, December 7, a day that president Roosevelt said, would live in infamy. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was the day hundreds of lives were lost. It was also the day that the United States entered the war. Every year, people have paused to reflect on the impact of that day. Several centuries ago, in an obscure village, in a stable with the smell of animals all around a young Jewish woman gave birth to a child. It was in the quietness of that stable that God entered our world as a human and the world has been a better place because of it. Today, the debates are raging over calling it "Christmas" or happy holidays," or some other non offensive designation. Many who call themselves Christians are up in arms about not call it Christmas and are making themselves heard. However, whatever you call it, it is going to be Christmas, changing the wording does not change the significance of that day and I for one will be reflecting on the impact of Jesus' coming to our world, will you? |
