The religious keepers of the law brought a woman who was caught in the act of adultery to Jesus asking Him what they should do with her. Should they follow the law and stone her, or did Jesus have some other treatment in mind. It is here that you find the famous statement, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Seeing as how they had lost that round, they simply dropped their rocks and departed. Jesus seeing the woman, asked about her accusers and she said she had none to accuse her. Jesus response was, "neither do I condemn you, go your way and sin no more." Jesus was always ready to show compassion. In fact on one occasion He said, "Go and learn what this means, I desire mercy not sacrifice" Some, however had misunderstood what Jesus said, and what His approach to sin is about. Jesus did not need to condemn thewoman, she did that. When He told her to go and sin no more, He was making it clear her behavior was sinful and it need to stop. Jesus has compassion for those who sin (Thank God for that) but Jesus never condoned sin. It would be in total violation of His nature. Are you needing forgiveness? |
