Many Americans today have become soft. When difficulties emerge, we tend to turn to government or to some charity to fix our problems. Consequently we have created a culture that lacks any sense of self-reliance. Although this is a concern, I have a greater concern for those who claim to be disciples of Jesus. The Lord told His diciples, "in the world you will have tribulations." John 16:33. But it seems as though we want God to remove every difficulty that arises in our life. We want a faith that is easy and costs us nothing. But Jesus did not bring that kind of religion. A casual reading of the scriptures tells us that those who went before us had a difficult time of it. They were thrown in prison, lost their property, their jobs and some became sacrifices to the lions. They died for their faith. In Oregons's early history, people challenged all sorts of obstacles to come out west. Many died on the trail. As they buried their dead, they sang songs of heaven. They never asked for an easy journey. How is your faith holding up under stress and challenges? Be in prayer and thank God for your hope. |
