The fact people make mistakes is a given. Mistakes are those things we normally do unintentionally. We unhook a trailer and forget to unplug the pigtail, that is a mistake. We say something hurtful to someone unintentionally, that is a mistake. Sometimes those "mistakes" can be costly. They can result in a financial loss or it can result in the loss of a friendship. Most of the times mistakes can be rectified without too much of a cost or penalty. No where in scripture is sin defined as a mistake. They are simply not the same. A young girl gets pregnant out of wedlock and says, "I made a mistake." We do not want to use the word sin because it is a very distasteful word and one we want to avoid. That word also produces a guilty conscience, as well it should. Once can made a mistake and not require forgiveness, however when we commit sin, we need forgiveness and that can only be found in Jesus Christ. Sin is what sent Jesus to the cross, not mistakes. Only when we call it what it really is, will we begin to do something about our condition. God wants to forgive, but He will not do so unless we acknowledge our sin and confess it to Him. |
