In 1973 Secretariat stunned the horse racing world, by not just winning the triple crown (The Kentucky Derby, Preadkness and the Belmont Stakes) but the way he won them. He was a phenomenal runner and few, if any, horses could keep up with him. A great champion not only must have speed, it has to have heart, a desire to run. The scriptures speak of the Christian life as being a race. The Hebrew writer tells us to "run with endurance." To have endurance you must be willing to stand pain, distress or fatigue. You must have a desire to see something through. No Olympic contestant can compete with half of a heart or a weak determination. No one can live the Christrian life without that same commitment. There are many people who at one time wanted to be a follower of Jesus and had a great beginning. At some point they became fatigued, discouraged, or simply decided to give in to the pain that comes with being a disciple of Jesus. Some have convinced themselves that although they have quit the race, they are still in the competition. It doesn't work that way. In this race, it is not the one who gets to the finish line first that wins, but rather it is making it to the finish. The question is, do you have the heart to keeep running? |
