It was Solomon who wrote, "There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven...a time to be silent and a time to speak." Ecclesiastes 3: 1-7. There is a lot of talk going on around us. People are fearful of silence, and so they speak when they should be listening. When we are silent, we are able to hear more what the other person is saying. I am not speaking about words they utter, but rather the feelings and the unspoken messages that are hidden beneath the spoken word. The problem of not hearing happens often in the husband/wife relationship. She speaks and he fails to hear and then he sits dumbfounded as she storms off in tears. Husbands seem terribly slow at learning the art of listening. It may be because men tend to speak bluntly about things where as women are more inclined to allow their feelings to suface through the communication process. Sometimes God speaks quietly to us. He uses experiences, sufferings and the sound of silence to get our attention. Are we listening, or are we to busy making noise? |
