But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. Thought: We need to stand firm in our faith. The Bible teaches us how to be living our spiritual lives, the example we need to be to others. Use it to strengthen God's will in your life. |

Well, Cheryl, remember that there are some of us (me, for example) that were -not- taught the scriptures from childhood. I grew up in a family where God was respected, but in the first 15 years of my life I doubt I attended any kind of church service more than 6-7 times; and that was part of Scouting or when an aunt took me. As an "adult" of around 18-19, the calling became more evident, as my mom in particular always taught me the basics of God being a good thing. And it seems like I can remember her reading from a popular book (that I'd love to have again) called "Little Visits With God" - but that was about it. I turned closest to God when life was darkest. I'd made quite a mess of things and the people of the church picked me up, dusted me off, and gave me a PURPOSE in life. That was in 1976. I was baptized November 23 of 1976 (as best I can remember) and later married there in the church in December, 1978 at the age of 23. My point in all this is that there may be some saying as I did, "Hey, I didn't get all that..." and I just want them to know that its never too late. Even if you're 100 years old, had a rough life, mean to everybody, but ready to change your life and freely commit to Christ, He is there waiting with open arms. Mark |

Unlike you Mark, I grew up in a regimented religion. But like you God was respected and I definately believed in Him. About the age of 13 I quit going, something was missing. I didn't know quite what. I was a lost sheep to to speak of for many a year. Around my late 20's I met the man to be my husband, my lifelong partner. Still knowing something was missing in life, on our first date I asked "Do you believe in God". Don't know where that came from usually not a question one asks on a first date. But God was in the drivers seat not me and I am so glad he was. From them on I was on my way back to Jesus. Yes there have been a bump or two (or more) in the road. I try to keep my eye on the goal and thru prayers, my church family and the love of a wonderful man the road gets smoother. |

I think I know what you mean by "regimented" - where you're told what to think, say, and believe? I have several friends who are of various faiths and have asked some how they came to be Catholic, Jewish, or whatever fill-in-the-blank faith, and most said "Because that's what my family has always been." This puzzles me, sometimes. I don't understand the concept of "inherited faith" - even my own children, both of whom are Christian, CHOSE this way of life. I raised them to understand why their parents believe as they do, and when it came to the time they were ready to make a decision, THEY made the choice. My son was baptized at a youth retreat, and I had the privilege of baptizing my daughter here in North Bend after services one day some years ago. I often ask myself, though.... what if Matthew or Susan had chosen to be of some radical un-holy tyrant-ruled faith-system or another, perhaps (no offense intnded) for example on the order of another Jimmy Jones and his 1978 mass suicide of 913 People's Temple members. (reference: http://en.wikiped.../Jim_Jones) It scares me to think of such... I think that a person's faith has to be their own. They can't just be "Christian" because that's what everybody else is. They need to READ the Bible, Understand what is written, and THEN decide. Got a feeling I'm bumbling what I'm trying to say here, but do you get what I mean? |
