Be Thankful by Norm Russell

In Luke 17, Jesus is met by ten lepers. Those men made one simple request "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us" (verse 13). When Jesus saw them, He told them to go and show themselves to the priests which was in keeping of the Mosiac law. While going, they were healed. One of them, seeing that he was healed turned back and, with a loud voice, began to glorify God. When he reached Jesus, he fell at His feet and began to thank Him.

We have no idea who the man was, but he certainly left an impression on Jesus, and those other nine also left an impression on Him. (Verse 17 and 18) One out of ten was grateful. It is hard to imagine such a thing in light of what they had been cleansed from.

But, what about us? We have been saved from something far more serious than leprosy. Jesus came to our world to bring us redemption. He went to a cross and bore our sins so that we can live eternally in that place that defies description. Wouldn't you like to show your gratitude for such a marvelous gift? Let me suggest a couple of ways we can do that. First we can show our thanks by telling Him so. When we pray, we have that opportunity to express our thanks for Jesus coming into the world, laying aside His equality with God and paying the price for our sin. This is a gift that God has given us, and saying "thank you" is appropriate.

We can show our thanks through worship. The man returned and fell at Jesus' feet and said thank you. When we assemble and we commence to sing songs of praise, and participate in the Lord's Supper, we have an opportunity to say, "thank you Jesus for giving me a second chance at life." That is what worship is about. It is showing our thanks for God reaching out to us in mercy.

We can show our thanks by telling others what Jesus has done for us. You will recall the man who had been possessed with demons in Luke 8. After Jesus had freed him of the demons, he requested that Jesus allow him to accompany Jesus and His diciples upon their leaving. Jesus refused and told him to return to his house and tell everyone what great things God had done for him. The man went out and told the whole country. What better way is there to show how thankful you are?

Have a great Thanksgiving.
