86 Years of Marriage!

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of North Carolina are not household names. You have neverheard of them right? I hadn’t until I read a flyer that came across my desk the other day.

What makes them so special is that they are in the Guinness book of World Records for the longest marriage of a living couple. She was 15 when they married and he was 18. Today they are 101 and 104 respectively. They have been married for 86 years. On Valentines Day they were asked a number of questions.

One particular question was “What’s the one thing you have in common that transcends everything else?” Their answer, “We are both Christians and believe in God. Marriage is a commitment to the Lord. We pray with and for each other every day.” In a throw away society such as ours, it is comforting to hear about those who refused to allow the worlds values and selfishness to interfere with their relationship. When you pray for each other and with each other, you recognize just how valuable the other person is. If you want your marriage to last, try what the Fisher’s did, become a Christian, commit your marriage to the Lord, and pray together. It works.
