Several weeks ago I challenged the congregation to be praying for the church. There were a number of items that were suggested that needed our attention: 1. Pray for the church 2. Pray for the leadership 3. Pray for Carter's ministry. 4. Pray for your preacher. 5. Pray for individual members regarding their faith. 6. Pray for God to open doors that we might reach the lost. 7. Pray for God to defeat those forces that threaten us. Every one of those things listed above are important to the health and welfare of the church. Sometimes conditions deteriorate before our eyes without us really noticing it. I think this was what took place in many of the churches Paul wrote to during his ministry. The church at Corinth is an often used example of what can and does occur in a church even though they were guided by the Holy Spirit. Division, immorality, lawsuits, doctrinal issues, pride, and discrimination. This all did not happen overnight. You can readily assume that all was well in the ealy days of the church. However, either by not being alert or simply ignoring what was taking place, the church slid into a pattern that was destructive. When the apostle wrote to the church at Ephesus, he said "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armour of God, so that you willl be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the full armour of God so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything to stand firm." Satan is alive and well and he has one purpose in mind - to destroy the work of God. I am convinced if he came charging through the door, we would all lock arms and send him packing. However, such is not the case. He is very subtle and he works behind the scenes. The one weapon we have to use against him is prayer. Therefore, let us be diligent in praying for God to bring about his downfall. Norm Russell |
