I have been riding horses for over forty years. It is fun and I have the blessing of not spending much time on the ground following a cantankerous fit by a horse that wanted very much to unseat me. (Believe me, I have lost some battles too.) However, things have changed since my first encounter with one of those one thousand pound animals. Trainers are much more sophisticated in their training skills and riders are becoming much better. The other day during a riding lesson my teacher and I began to discuss all the things people do to make a horse and rider better partners. At one point I commented on something someone did I felt was silly. She said, "Keep an open mind." That was good counsel, status quo is never acceptable and you must be willing to step out if positive changes are ever going to be made. This is true not only in the horse world, it is also true in every walk of life. We can get comfortable with status quo. It feels secure and peaceful. But will we be satisfied with that? Don't we want something better? Of course we do and it is that desire, that makes Christianity so appealing. We do want something better. Come visit with us Sunday. Norm Russell |
